Nine America Songs

Programme to include Wagner 'Wesendonck lieder'

Richard Wagner said of his Wesedonk Lieder: "I have done nothing better than thee songs".

The same could be said of Richard Strauss's sublime Four Last Songs.

The group of American songs include bravura encore songs performed by Kirsten Flagstad, Eileen Farrell, Helen Traubel and Eleanor Steber at the end of their recitals. As Christine Brewer writes in an intimate performance note: 'These little gems evoke an era of recitals not often encountered these days. Stepping back into that era has been a joy to Roger and me, and I hope it will bring back memories to those who might have heard these women sing these songs, or perhaps ignite a new love affair for younger listeners!'

"Named one of the top 20 sopranos of all time (BBC Music Magazine), her range, golden tone, boundless power, and control make her a favorite of the stage and highly sought-after recording artist, one who is "in her prime and sounding glorious"
