'It is for the finale that Mozart has reserved all the resources of his science, and all the power, which no one seems to have possessed to the same degree with himself, of concealing that science, and making it the vehicle for music as pleasing as it is learned. Nowhere has he achieved more.’

George Groves

J S Bach Ricercar
Bartok Divertimento for String Orchestra
Mozart Symphony no.41 in C, k 551 ‘Jupiter’

The programme explores the ‘Mathematical’ relationship to music. Bach relishes working out multiple fugues in his Ricercar from the Musical Offering; Bartok entertains with shifting rhythms and tonalities, and fugal writing in his delicious neo-classical Divertimento; and Mozart dazzles with a finale that contains a 5-voice fugue representing the five major themes of the symphony.
